Herman Francis
Heubel
Apr 15, 1924 — Dec 25, 2022
Columbus
Herman Francis Heubel, April 15, 1924 - December 25, 2022, age 98.
Herm was born in Trafford, PA to Herman John and Margaret Becker Heubel. He was the third of their seven children (John, Kathryn, Herm, Margaret, Tom, Bill, and Bernard) who remained close and enjoyed each other's company throughout their lives.
Herm attended Sharon High School, where he played saxophone in the school and in the Shenango Valley Dance Band. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp/Air Force, flying 41 missions over Italy in 1945 as a P-47 pilot. He attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, forever grateful to the GI Bill that made it possible.
Following graduation, he married Phyllis Margaret Johnson on October 29, 1949. Together they raised 4 children (Janet, Mary Fran, John, and Brian) in Columbus OH, having moved to the area from Sharon PA in 1958. Happily married for nearly 65 years until Phyllis' death in 2014, they lived in Columbus until Herm's retirement from The Ohio National Bank (Trust Officer) in 1983.
In January 1984 Herm and Phyllis moved to Seven Lakes NC where they spent 25 years in their lakefront/golf community home. Herm managed to hit SEVEN holes in one on various golf courses in Ohio and North Carolina. In 2009 Herm and Phyllis moved back to Columbus, living at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber community. When Covid-19 erupted Herm moved to an apartment in the Hidden Lakes community where his family was able to provide live-in and neighbor support until his passing. The family is most grateful to Capital City Hospice for their outstanding care in final weeks and days.
Herm is survived by his sister, Margaret Heubel Scully; his children, Janet (Ralph) Rosenfield, Mary Frances (Dennis) Tachibana, John Heubel, and Brian Heubel; grandhildren Joshua Rosenfield, Douglas Rosenfield, Annie Rosenfield (Casey) Radcliff, and Bodhi Walker-Heubel; and great-granddaughter Piper Keipert-Rosenfield. Numerous family and friends will miss him dearly.
Herm chose to donate his body to the Ohio State University Division of Anatomy.
