MURRAY

Dorothy Jean "Stevie" Murray , née Stevens, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the Columbus Colony for Elderly Care in Westerville, Ohio, on Thursday, November 9, 2023. She was 102 years old, having started life in Cambridge, Ohio, on August 14, 1921. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Murray, and her son, Mike Murray. She is survived by two nieces in Texas. She began her career at F&R Lazarus Department Store in Columbus in 1944 as a copywriter and, staying with Lazarus through the ensuing years, she retired in 1986 as Vice President of Advertising. Stevie took great pride in the Advertising Department team. She was devoted to the unique "family" culture that was Lazarus, and the many friendships she cultivated there, regarding them very much as her second family. Stevie will be especially remembered for her dry sense of humor; her rectitude; her calm, steady leadership; her sense of fairness; and for being the consummate cheerleader as she supported the Advertising team's annual Christmas show, produced for the store's employees. Never seeking the spotlight herself, she could be found in the front row like a proud mother. Thank you, Stevie, for the example you set for those of us fortunate enough to have witnessed and learned from it. Stevie was laid to rest on Saturday, November 11, at St. Joseph Cemetery, next to her husband, Jim and close to her son, Mike. Graveside prayer service was led by Msgr. John K. Cody.
